If your heat pump isn’t functioning as it should, there are several troubleshooting tips to help you diagnose the problem. Keep in mind, however, that most major issues will require professional repair. Don’t approach heat pump service as a DIY job, as you may end up doing more damage to the unit than good.
Depending on your system, you may need to switch modes between heating and cooling months. In our climate, you won’t often need to use your heat pump for heating, so it’s important to make sure you’ve adjusted the settings properly when heating season rolls around. Look for Ice
If you notice ice on your heat pump in the hot summer months, there’s a problem with the system that requires professional repair. Low refrigerant is a common cause of icing, and something you should never approach as a DIY job. Refrigerant is a hazardous substance and should be left to the professionals. It’s a myth that you should have to regularly charge your refrigerant. In a functioning system, the refrigerant circulates continuously. It’s never used up, so if it needs recharging, there’s a leak.
Your system may also freeze over if the filter is too dirty or the coils are covered with dust. This prevents it from maintaining the proper temperature, so things can get too cold. You can change the filter yourself, but other tasks are better handled by our technicians.
Inspect Your Thermostat
In many cases, trouble with the heat pump really has nothing to do with the system itself. The problem may lie at your thermostat. If your thermostat isn’t reading the temperature correctly, your heat pump won’t get the proper signal to turn on or off when you need it to.
You may be able to tell on your own if the thermostat’s readings aren’t accurate regarding the current temperatures in the home. Check for Air Flow
If you can hear your system running but you don’t feel any airflow, there’s likely a problem with the blower or belt.
